Can 15 minutes save you 15% or more on car insurance?

Between the various GEICO commercials (gecko’s, cavemen and now the dude with the hair), the Allstate commercials (featuring actor Dennis Haysbert) and now, the smiling dick pushing State Farm insurance (never mind the moronic “Magic Jingle Parking Lot” commercial), one can’t help but wonder if they could save a few bucks, especially in view of how these companies rake us all over the coals, increasing rates for no apparent reason year after year, even if your driving record is perfect and/or you’ve never submitted a claim. Add to that the weekly swath of junk mail claiming to save you hundreds each year, and I finally picked up the phone.

For no reason other than a good price, I’ve had my motorcycle, vehicle and homeowners policies all with GEICO for a few years now. But during this recent economic debacle, in a time when real estate values have plummeted as foreclosures have sky-rocketed, GEICO (they actually use Travelers for their homeowners policies) has seen fit to raise my homeowners insurance 25.4% in one year claiming “rebuild costs have increased”. Really? In the midst of this nightmare, the cost to rebuild my house has risen over 25%, in less than a year, during this near collapse of the world economy? Pinch me.
